Bradenton resident and Florida State University rising sophomore Dominic Cotrone was one of the upset-makers on Monday at the 2012 USTA Florida Bobby Curtis Junior State Championships in Daytona Beach, ousting No. 14 seed Jack Haffey of Naples in three sets 6-2, 6-7(5), 6-3 in the Boys' 18s division. Later in the day in the rain-backed-up schedule Cotrone played again, winning an emotionally contentious match against Sebatian Acuna of Sunny Isles Beach when Acuna was eventually defaulted with Cotrone leading 6-3, 4-3 at the Florida Tennis Center.

At FSU this past spring, the 18-year-old Cotrone went 5-1 in singles, with two of the wins clinching team matches for the Seminoles. Prior to entering FSU, Cotrone was ranked No. 1 in Florida in the Boys' 18s rankings, and he won the Florida state singles championship for Bradenton Christian School, posting an undefeated season.

Cotrone next faces the No. 2 seed Joshua Wardell of Fort Myers at 11 a.m. on Tuesday.

Cotrone was one of four unseeded players causing upsets in the Boys' 18 division Monday, while the Girls' 16 division saw six seeded upsets, led by Coral Gables' Julieta Dalmau topping No. 3 Christiana Brigante of Weston, and Jupiter's Carlee Rizzolo defeating No. 6 Priyanka Shah of Orlando in straight sets.
