Jacksonville to Host USTA Town Hall Meeting

USTA League new web.jpgThe Jacksonville, Fla., area will host a USTA Town Hall Tennis Meeting open to the public on Thursday, May 10, 2012, from 7-8:30 p.m. at San Jose Country Club.

The meeting will be an opportunity to discuss the 2013 USTA League restructuring changes that will be going into effect.

Three additional age divisions will be added for 2013 -- Adult 65 & Over, and Mixed 40 & Over and Mixed 55 & Over -- will be added, in addition to other possible divisions and rule additions, to be discussed. The new Florida league restructuring will take effect in January 2013, when the current monikers "Senior" (50 & over) and "Super Senior" (60 & over) will be replaced instead by a more representative grouping based on age (18-over, 40-over, 55-over, 65-over). USTA League research and focus group results predict a significant increase in the coming years in league participation, with changes designed to better align age groups with current and future league populations.

"I would strongly suggest that all USTA League players that have any questions on the restructuring for the 2013 league season attend this meeting," says Amanda Becker, USTA Florida tennis program coordinator for the Jacksonville area. "Representatives from the USTA Florida league staff will be in attendance as well as the local league coordinators for the First Coast, and there will be time designated for questions and answers from players."

The currently-existing 18 & Over and the new 40 & Over divisions will feature both singles and doubles, while the 55 & Over and 65 & Over divisions will consist of three doubles positions. Mixed doubles will also consist of three doubles positions. Additional league restructuring possibilities include rule changes designed to give 5.0 and 5.5-rated singles players more league play opportunities, and will be voted on in 2012.

Alexandra Stevenson 1st Player Announced for Sarasota Invitational

stevenson alexandraFormer Wimbledon semifinalist Alexandra Stevenson has been announced as the first player confirmed for the inaugural edition of the Sarasota Open 2012 Ladies Invitational Tournament. The women's tournament will be held alongside the men's event on April 14-22, 2012, at The Tennis Gardens at Longboat Key Club & Resort in Longboat Key, Fla.

Stevenson ranked in the Top 100 for five years and No. 18 in the world in 2002 when she made her Wimbledon run. Shoulder surgery in 2004 has seen her make a number of comebacks on the WTA Tour.

"We are thrilled to have Alexandra on board as our first confirmed player in the Ladies Invitational Tournament," said Tony Driscoll, co-tournament director. "She will bring excitement to the event with her determination to make a strong comeback as she strives towards achieving her goal of a successful second career. That determination coupled with the format of tournament play in tandem with the men is a winning combination and one that you will not see very often."

Former champions of the Sarasota Open USTA Pro Circuit event include James Blake and Kei Nishikori. For more information go to www.SarasotaOpen.org.
