The Miami area in September wrapped up seven USTA Free Tennis Play Days in celebration of Nickelodeon's Worldwide Day of Play, featuring the 10 and Under Tennis format for the entire family, and full-court tennis for older children.

Approximately 800 children participated in the events, not counting family members.

"It was great seeing so many kids and parents attending these Play Days to learn more about our USTA programs," said USTA Florida Miami-area Tennis Program Coordinator Cathy Nordlund. "The pros and our local league coordinators, Cyndi Johnston and Donna Tollefsen, worked together to put on fantastic fun and informative events."

Participating clubs and facilities were Coral Reef Park, Tamiami Tennis Center, Kerdyk Biltmore Tennis Center, Douglas Park, Boys & Girls Club, The Links, and the Michael-Ann Russell JCC.

The events are an effort to get kids active and involved in tennis following National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month. USTA Free Tennis Play Days provide kids and parents of all skill levels with the opportunity to experience tennis in a social and fun setting. The events are open to the public with an emphasis placed on family participation, effort and sportsmanship. Information was also be available on 10 and Under Tennis, Jr. Team Tennis leagues, other local play opportunities, and special free USTA memberships for qualifying participants.

"The Play Days also kicked off our Jr. Team Tennis and 10 and Under Tennis seasons," Nordlund said. "Kids who were already in our program came out for the festivities, and kids and parents came to learn more about the programs. The area pros organized and ran each of their Play Days, they are committed to getting the word out about 10 and Under Tennis and Jr. Team Tennis."

The Play Days also featured raffles and prize give-aways for children, in addition to numerous other activities.
