Miramar's Coutinho Pushes 'Tennis for Everyone' Hispanic Outreach

October 15, 2014 01:43 PM
Coutinho-Juan-webJuan Coutinho is a relatively new volunteer for USTA Florida, but not in the world of Florida tennis.

For years the Miramar resident has participated in Hispanic workshops for players in the Ft. Lauderdale and Miami areas, but over the last year he has been instrumental with the roll out of USTA Florida's Tenis para Todos (Tennis for Everyone) initiative.

"I participated as a speaker for the Tenis para Todos workshop in Pembroke Pines, and also took part in last year's tennis promotion at the Miami Dolphins game," said Coutinho, referring to the annual event at one Dolphins home game where fans can play on mini-tennis courts prior to the game.

"I like to provide positive feedback to players and especially kids, to see them progress and encourage them to develop positive habits and tennis skills."

USTA Florida Diversity and Marketing Coordinator Maria Romo says Coutinho is always looking to help in outreach efforts while also focusing on his growth as a tennis professional.

"He will be one of the volunteers at our Miami Dolphins game this year on Nov. 2," Romo says. "He is a very pleasant coach and great for the Hispanic community."

Coutinho is also active in assisting at local Kids' Play Days, and organizes teams to compete in the USTA Florida Kids Team Tennis Challenge series of events.

"I received good feedback from other tennis academies in Dade and Broward counties when I promoted the Team Tennis Challenge in Weston at Midtown Athletic Club," he said. "I feel proud of this effort to grow the sport of tennis -- I have a passion for growing the game with children and in our community."

He has also over the past few years worked with Gustavo Granitto and current USTA Florida President-Elect Nancy Horowitz in promoting Hispanic coaching workshops in South Florida, and is a certified coach in the "Spanish Way to Develop Players."

"Juan has the passion and dedication to help children and adults have fun and reach their full potential with tennis," Horowitz says. "He is a true gentleman always willing to help when asked, or accept a new challenge if needed. He is not afraid of hard work and is always trying to grow tennis in South Florida. He has grown as a person, and this award is well deserved."

USTA Florida congratulates and thanks Juan Coutinho as the October 2014 Volunteer of the Month for his passion in growing the Hispanic tennis community, and tennis in general, in the Ft. Lauderdale/Miami area.
