Jerry Miller’s teammates wanted to show him that cancer may be able to temporarily keep you down – but not out – of tennis during the October USTA Florida Mixed 18 & Over Sectional Championships, held at the Florida Tennis Center in Daytona Beach.

Miller’s 18 & Over Division Mixed 7.0 team out of the Lake Wales Country Club had a special drive in Daytona Beach, playing for their teammate who only a month earlier had been diagnosed with cancer and told by his doctor to put his tennis play on hold.

In Daytona the team took to the court wearing “It’s Miller Time” shirts, including the Bible verse from Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Miller watched from the sidelines as his inspired squad ran all the way to the semifinals of the tournament.

“Jerry is a 4.0 player that participates in every league the USTA offers, including mixed, combo and adult men,” said teammate Melody Johnson. “You will not find a nicer person who is always wearing a big smile and exhibiting the best of sportsmanship.”

The shirts were provided by teammate Laura Motis and her husband John, and the team fielded many questions and positive comments about the shirts and the team spirit throughout the weekend.

You can support tennis fighting cancer this October and November along with USTA Florida by playing in tennis or other events throughout Florida. To learn more click HERE.
