Tallahassee, Tampa Teams Win USTA League Mixed Tennis Titles, Advance to USTA Nationals

USTA Florida League mixed doubles teams from Leon (Tallahassee) and Hillsborough (Tampa) counties captured championships over the weekend at the USTA Florida Sectionals Adult Mixed 7.0 & 9.0 League Championships, Oct. 5-7, 2012, at the Florida Tennis Center in Daytona Beach. The Florida Section champions will now advance to represent USTA Florida at the USTA League Mixed Doubles National Championships in Arizona in November.

The Mixed 9.0 champs from Hillsborough County/Tampa
The Mixed 9.0 finalists from South Miami-Dade/Coral Gables
The Mixed 7.0 champs from Leon County/Tallahassee
The Mixed 7.0 finalists from Brevard County/Melbourne
NTRP (National Tennis Rating Program) divisions of play over the weekend were 7.0 and 9.0 teams, with combined player ratings of no more than a 1.0 differential between the partners (example: a 9.0 team could be two 4.5-rated players, or a 5.0 and a 4.0). Team matches over the weekend consisted of three mixed doubles matches per round. Teams advanced from round robin play to qualify for the semifinals and the final.

Division champions over the weekend were:

9.0 Division Champion: Hillsborough County (Harbour Island Athletic Club, Tampa)
Team Roster: Josh Melton (captain), Rolland Miller, Lisa Nicoll, Chris Allen, Brandon Muth, Mark Whitwell, Mike Hooper, Catherine Canady, Larry Woodruff, Sharon Benson, Alexandra Gade, Ignacio Molina, Brenda Sturm, Nicole Mezrah
Final Result: defeated South Miami-Dade County (Salvadore Park, Coral Gables) 2-1
Semifinals Results: Hillsborough defeated Volusia/Flagler counties 2-1, South Miami-Dade defeated Broward County 2-1

7.0 Division Champion: Leon County (Tallahassee, no club affiliation)
Team Roster: Denean Sykes (captain), Victoria Heuler, Travis Sykes, Keegan Phipps, Lori Elliott, Shashank Golla, Laura Phillips-Kirchhoff, Sachin Murthy, Warren Weathington, Clay Johnson, Lorei Salie, Annie Wang 
Final Result: defeated Brevard County (Fee Ave. Courts, Melbourne) 2-1
Semifinals Results: Leon defeated Alachua County 3-0, Brevard defeated Duval County 2-1

A Marion County team also advances directly to the 2.5 nationals as the only Florida region to host a local 2.5 league in 2012.

Eighteen different counties or regions were represented over the weekend at the USTA Florida Sectionals Adult Mixed 7.0 & 9.0 League Championships: Alachua, Brevard, Broward, Collier, Duval, Escambia, Hillsborough, Indian River/St. Lucie/Martin, Lee/Charlotte, Leon, Marion, North Palm Beach, Orange/Seminole, Pinellas, Polk, Sarasota/Manatee, South Miami-Dade, and Volusia/Flagler counties.

The 2012 USTA League 2.5, 7.0 & 9.0 Mixed National Championships will take place Nov. 9-11, 2012 at the Hilton El Conquistador Golf & Tennis Resort in Tucson, Ariz.

USTA League provides fun and competitive matches for thousands of tennis players nationwide. It also gives players the opportunity to experience team camaraderie, to improve their tennis skills, to meet and compete against new players and to participate in competition beyond local league play. There were more than 806,000 participants in USTA League in 2011 within the adult, senior and mixed doubles divisions and the section league programs. The program, which celebrated its 30th Anniversary last year, is the world's largest recreational tennis league.
