Naples resident Jesse Witten won the men's singles at the US Open National Playoffs-New England Section Qualifying Tournament, defeating Anton Protsnenko of Greenwich, Conn, 6-4, 6-1 in the final on Sunday at the Yale University Tennis Center in West Haven, Conn.

Witten did not drop a set through six matches, winning his semifinal meeting 6-0, 6-0. The tournament win advances Witten to the 2014 US Open National Playoffs and a chance at earning a wildcard into the men's qualifying at the US Open.

A longtime touring professional, Witten reached No. 163 in the world in early 2010 and has played on the USTA Pro Circuit periodically over the past few years, winning his first title in four years at the $10,000 USTA Pro Circuit Futures in Indian Harbour Beach, Fla., last June.

He posted the best Grand Slam result of his career at the 2009 US Open, qualifying and knocking off two Top 100 players before falling to Novak Djokovic in four sets in the third round.

Witten is a former University of Kentucky standout, reaching the NCAA singles final in 2002. Last year he won the mixed doubles title (with his sister, former UK standout Sarah) at the US Open National Playoffs-Florida Sectional Qualifying Tournament.

The winners from each of the 13 sectional qualifying tournaments held throughout the spring and summer advance to the US Open National Playoffs - Men's, Women's and Mixed Doubles Championships, to be held during the Connecticut Open, an Emirates Airline US Open Series women's event, in August. The US Open National Playoffs mixed doubles champions receive a main draw wildcard into the 2014 US Open, while the men's and women's singles champions earn a wildcard into the US Open Qualifying Tournament held the week prior to the US Open.
The US Open National Playoffs-Florida Section Qualifying Tournament will be held in Tallahassee, Fla., on June 19-22, at The Scott Speicher Tennis Center at Florida State University.
