Florida College Tennis Spotlight: Josie Kuhlman, University of Florida

By Colette Lewis

Kuhlman_Josie_2014After an outstanding summer on the USTA Pro Circuit, University of Florida freshman Josie Kuhlman has already had a major impact on women’s Division I college tennis in the first two months of the individual fall season.

After reaching two finals and a semifinal in $10,000 women’s tournaments earlier in the summer, the Ponte Vedra resident continued her fine play at the USTA 18s Nationals, winning the consolation tournament and reaching the final in doubles.

At the first collegiate major of the year, the ITA Riviera All-American Championships in Pacific Palisades, Calif., Kuhlman advanced through pre-qualifying and qualifying, winning six matches before falling to eventual finalist Chanelle Van Nguyen of UCLA.

A few weeks later, Kuhlman competed in the Southeast regional in Atlanta, and although unseeded, she claimed the title, defeating top seed Lauren Herring of Georgia in the quarterfinals, and teammate and No. 3 seed Brianna Morgan in the final. With the regional title, Kuhlman advanced to this weekend’s USTA/ITA Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in New York, which features 32 of the best players in the country. Kuhlman also will be playing doubles at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, partnering fellow Gator freshman Peggy Porter. Porter and Kuhlman lost in the regional final to teammates Brooke Austin and Kourtney Keegan, who are also in the Indoor field.

Kuhlman, who turned 19 on Wednesday, was coached for many years by former ATP great Brian Gottfried and has recently trained with Todd Martin. Gottfried, Martin and now Florida head coach Roland Thornqvist have provided her with the tools to post impressive results as a new member of one of the top programs in country.

Players are asked to RSVP for the event online. The first 25 players to register and participate will receive a special gift.

Additional play opportunity information will be available for USTA League, the country's largest recreational tennis league, with more than 800,000 players nationwide competing in match play, meeting new people, and enjoying the camaraderie of teammates in national age divisions (18 & Over, 40 & Over, 55 & Over in singles, doubles and mixed).
