The annual gala fundraiser for the MaliVai Washington Kids Foundation in Jacksonville, Fla., has seen a number of celebrity attendees over the years, but this October's 17th annual celebration will receive an extra boost from a former player whose popularity transcended the world of tennis.
Andre Agassi will be a guest speaker when the 17th Annual Merrill Lynch/Bank of America Gala to benefit the MaliVai Washington Kids Foundation is held on Thursday, Oct. 17, 2013, at the Sawgrass Marriott Resort in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.
"We are thrilled that Andre will be joining us this year," said founder and former Wimbledon finalist MaliVai Washington. "We had talked about moving the event from the original September dates to get away from the US Open finals, which are now on Monday, and when Andre's schedule had an open date, we jumped at the chance."
Like Washington, Agassi oversees his own foundation to assist at-risk youth, the Andre Agassi Foundation for Education in Las Vegas.
"Through our mission, we encourage our youth to become champions in classrooms, on tennis courts and throughout communities," Washington said. "Andre is not only a champion in the tennis world, but a champion for all he does for at-risk youth."
Agassi was the world No. 1-ranked player for 101 weeks during his career, and became one of only four players to win all four Grand Slam titles (Australian, French, Wimbledon, US Open), beginning with Wimbledon in 1992 and the French Open in 1999. He compiled a 8-7 win-loss record in Grand Slam finals, in addition to winning Olympic gold and the Davis Cup for the U.S. He is married to fellow former No. 1 Steffi Graf, and the couple have two children.
The 17th Annual Merrill Lynch/Bank of America Gala to benefit the MaliVai Washington Kids Foundation will include a cocktail reception, silent and live auction, dinner, scholarship awards to MWKF students, guest speakers and dancing. There will also be pre- and post-event private receptions, as well as a Meet & Greet Session with Agassi for large donors.
Event tickets are limited and go on sale to the general public on June 15. For additional information, please visit www.malwashington.com or call (904) 359-5437 (KIDS).
The MaliVai Washington Kids Foundation is a Jacksonville non-profit youth development organization which operates the TnT (Tennis-n-Tutoring) after-school program. The program serves nearly 200 at-risk youth in the community and provides free homework assistance, tennis lessons, mentoring, tutoring and life skills classes to students five days a week. MWKF also offers competitive tennis programs, a summer camp, community partnerships and outreach programs. For more info go to www.malwashington.com.
