UF Defeats UCF for Title at USTA Florida Tennis on Campus Year-end Championships

February 18, 2013 02:11 PM
TOC_2013For the fourth time in the last five years the University of Florida club tennis team captured the year-end USTA Florida Tennis on Campus Championships, defeating the University of Central Florida 27-12 in the final which concluded Feb. 17, 2013, at the Sanlando Park Tennis Center in Altamonte Springs, Fla.

For UF the year-end championships title capped a season where they won five of the six regular-season USTA Florida Tennis on Campus series tournaments, losing only once at the UCF Knitro Cup in November in Orlando, where they fell in the final to the host UCF Knights.

To gain the final in the Gold Bracket over the weekend the UF-"A" squad defeated the Florida Gulf Coast University "A" team 26-16. The UCF-"A" team gained the final by defeating the UF-"B" team 25-20 in the semis. UF-"B" defeated the FGCU-"A" team in the 3rd/4th place playoff.

The Silver Bracket was won by the Stetson-"A" team, which topped the University of Miami-"A" squad 28-21 in the final. In the Bronze Bracket final the FGCU-"B" team defeated the University of South Florida-"B" squad 27-17.

Florida State University also competed over the weekend, which saw the top school club teams in the state vying for berths to the national championships. Both UF and UCF now advance to represent the USTA Florida Section at the USTA National Campus Championships, to be held in April in Surprise, Ariz.

FGCU took home the Florida Tennis Club of the Year award for 2012-13.

"This is one of the most relaxed and fun tournament atmospheres I have ever been around," said USTA Florida Associate Executive Director Andy McFarland. "Realizing there are some amazing and talented players competing at supremely high levels of tennis, yet watching the kids laugh and joke with each other during matches and having teammates courtside cheering on their teammates is so unlike any other tournament I've witnessed. A big round of applause goes out to the tennis club presidents who really drive the programs on their school campuses. They organize, orchestrate, and even shell out some of their own money to assure their schools and teams are represented at these state championships. The Tennis on Campus program is one of the best programs the USTA has created the last decade and it has blossomed into a great national program. We need to get a number of the smaller schools to participate in the club series in Florida and our state championships however and that is something USTA Florida will be attempting to do in the coming years."

The Tennis on Campus team format features men's and women's singles, doubles and mixed doubles, with a minimum of two men and two women per team. The format uses World TeamTennis (WTT) scoring, where the first up to five games wins the match, with a 12-point super-tiebreak if the match is tied at four games all. Total cumulative games determine the overall winning team of each match. The WTT scoring format also features no-ad scoring, player substitutions, and player on-court coaching is allowed.
