U.S. Davis Cup Team Announced; Super 70s Tennis in Tampa

Courier Names Davis Cup Squad; Florida's Krajicek Practice Partner

US Davis Cup Team.jpgThe USTA and U.S. Davis Cup Captain Jim Courier announced that world No. 8 Mardy Fish, No. 10 John Isner, and the top-ranked doubles team of Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan will represent the United States in the 2012 Davis Cup by BNP Paribas quarterfinal tie against France on April 6-8, to be played on outdoor red clay at the Monte Carlo Country Club in Roquebrune Cap Martin, France.

France announced their roster of No. 6 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, No. 14 Gael Monfils, No. 33 Julien Benneteau and No. 43 Michael Llodra.

Courier says despite the slow red clay, France will have their hands full against Isner, who upset former French Open champ Roger Federer when the U.S. defeated Switzerland in the first round on red clay.

"It doesn't matter what surface John is playing on, his serve is going to be a nightmare to deal with if he's having a reasonable day, a normal service day," Courier said. "If he has time to set up and put some power behind the ball, he's the most destructive force in tennis. He's unplayable against if he does what he does very well. You just don't have the conversation at all. It's one-way traffic."

Florida's Austin Krajicek, nephew of former Wimbledon champ Richard Krajicek, who recently graduated from Texas A&M after claiming the NCAA Doubles Championship, will be among the U.S. practice partners for the tie.

Matches will be telecast live on Tennis Channel and streamed live on USTA.com for free starting at 6 a.m. ET, Friday on April 6; 8 a.m. ET Saturday; and 5 a.m. ET Sunday.

The quarterfinal tie will mark the 16th match-up overall between the U.S. and France in Davis Cup competition. The U.S. leads the overall series 8-7, with the last meeting taking place in the 2008 World Group quarterfinal in Winston-Salem, N.C. The U.S. won that tie, 4-1, on an indoor hardcourt behind a team of Andy Roddick, James Blake, and the Bryan brothers. The United States defeated France in the 1982 Davis Cup final in Grenoble, its only win against the French in France.

The winner of this match will face the winner of the quarterfinal between Spain and Austria. If the U.S. wins, it will either travel to Spain or host Austria in the semifinals on Sept. 14-16.

Super 70s Tennis Event Crowns Champion Teams in Tampa

"Super 70s" team tennis was celebrated on March 23-25, 2010, when Hunter's Green Country Club in Tampa, Fla., hosted 74 players participating in the annual Super 70's Norm Ott Invitational Tournament.

"We did have the return of our female and male player who have celebrated their 86th year," said Tournament Director Ruth Ann Ott. "Many players also won a raffle prize donated by USTA Florida staff and league coordinators."

The three division team winners were the St. Pete/Clearwater 7.0 ladies captained by Janice Stone, the Hillsborough County 7.0 men captained by Don Peterson, and the Pinellas County 8.0 men captained by Wendall Walker.

The St. Pete/Clearwater 7.0 ladies added their 2012 title to championships in 2011-10 and '08. The Hillsborough County 7.0 men ended a two-year reign by the 7.0 men from St. Louis, and Pinellas County 8.0 men added to their 2010 championship.

Players attended a dinner on the Friday night, and the specialty awards/gifts included Best-dressed Woman (Dolores Hayman), Man Who Lights Up the Courts (Wendall Walker), Captain Who Traveled the Furthest (Don Leisher from St. Louis), Most Diplomatic Captain (Don Peterson), Sharpest Player (Jorge Privat), Woman with the Best Hair (Liz Dunlop), and Player who Joined USTA and Self-rated to Play (Frank Davis).

"This year the tournament ended on Sunday March 25th, which was the third year anniversary of Norm Ott's passing," said Ruth Ann Ott of her husband, a tennis enthusiast and Navy SEAL who the tournament is named for. Ott during the event asked for a moment of silence in his memory, and for other tennis player's teammates who passed this last year, and for all fallen SEALS. "A donation will be made in Norm Ott's memory to Naval Special Warfare, which supports the men and families of Naval Special Warfare (SEALS). Norm was watching over us with lots of sunshine, and no rain."

The tentative date for the 2013 event is March 22-24. For more tournament info e-mail Ruth Ann Ott at raott@tampabay.rr.com.
