March 26, 2013 11:43 AM
Courier Keeps Same Team for U.S. vs. Serbia Davis Cup on April 5

DavisCupLogoUSAThe USTA and U.S. Davis Cup Captain Jim Courier will stick with a winning hand in the Davis Cup quarterfinals hosting Serbia, going with the previously-winning squad of Sam Querrey and John Isner in singles, and the Bryan brothers, Mike and Bob, in doubles.

Querrey, Isner and the Bryans defeated Brazil in the first round in Jacksonville, Fla., in February, and will host Serbia, led by world No. 1 Novak Djokovic, on April 5-7, 2013, in Boise, Idaho, on indoor hardcourt at the Taco Bell Arena.

Joining Djokovic on the Serbian Davis Cup team will be No. 44-ranked Viktor Troicki, No. 338 Ilija Bozoljac, and world No. 19 doubles player Nenad Zimonjic.

The U.S. squad was tested against Brazil, with Isner and the Bryans losing their matches, and Querrey clinching the tie in the fifth and deciding singles after dropping the first set.

"This team fought hard in the first round against Brazil and we expect a stern challenge when we face the Serbians in the quarterfinals," said Courier, in his third year as U.S. Davis Cup captain. "We are excited to bring the Davis Cup team to Boise for the first time and I expect a full house with enthusiastic crowd support for the home team."

Matches will be telecast live on Tennis Channel and begin at 3:30 p.m. ET on Friday, 3 p.m. ET on Saturday, and 2 p.m. ET on Sunday. Should the U.S. defeat Serbia, it would host Canada in the semifinal or travel to Italy, depending upon other quarterfinal results, on Sept. 13-15.

Serbia is only one of three countries to have a winning record against the U.S. Davis Cup team. Courier also announced the practice partners for the tie will be Tennys Sandgren and Mitchell Krueger. Sandgren, ranked No. 218 in the world, is a former University of Tennessee All-American, who reached the semifinals of the 2011 NCAA tournament. Krueger was formerly the top-ranked American boys' junior, peaking at a career-high No. 5 in the world junior rankings in January 2012 and advancing to the boys' singles semifinals at the French Open and Wimbledon in 2012. Krueger trains at the USTA Training Center Headquarters in Boca Raton, Fla.

The ITF Seniors World Team Championships is the top team event on the ITF Seniors circuit. Since its inception in 1981, the number of competitors attracted to this event has increased each year. In 1993, the ITF divided the Seniors World Championships into two groups -- Seniors (35 to 55-plus) and Super-Seniors (60 to 80-plus for men and 60 to 75-plus for women). Following the ITF Seniors World Team Championships, the World Individual Championships will take place from March 24-31. Both the World Team and Individual championships are held at the Ali Bey Club Manavgat in Antalya.
