U.S. Davis Cup to Host Britain, Murray in 2014

September 18, 2013 09:52 AM
Davis_Cup_World_GroupThe 2014 Davis Cup World Group draw was released on Wednesday, and among some blockbuster first round match-ups are the U.S. hosting the Andy Murray-led Great Britain team.

The 2014 Davis Cup first round will be held on Jan. 31-Feb. 2, 2014, following the Australian Open.

"If I'm fit and healthy, I will be there to play," Murray told BBC Sport regarding Britain's 2014 campaign. "A couple of years ago that wasn't the case when I sat down with [captain] Leon Smith. I wanted the younger guys to step up and experience it. There was no use us being in the World Group because we weren't ready for it. But now I think we are ready to do well. We have a top doubles team. Dan (Evans) and James (Ward) will continue to improve and we've got the makings of a very solid team."

The U.S. will likely counter with John Isner, Sam Querrey and the Bryan brothers on a surface and location to be named by the USTA and captain Jim Courier.

The tie will put a history stamp on the competition, as U.S. vs. Britain was the first-ever Davis Cup tie held in 1900.

Other first round World Group match-ups will be Serbia and world No. 1 Novak Djokovic hosting Switzerland and possibly former No. 1 Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka, the Czech Republic hosting the Netherlands, Japan hosting Canada, Germany hosting Spain, France hosting Australia, Argentina hosting Italy, and Kazakhstan hosting Belgium.
