USTA Florida Adult Mixed 7.0, 9.0 Sectionals This Weekend

adult-mixed7.jpgUSTA League National Championships berths in Arizona will be on the line Oct. 5-7, 2012, at the Florida Tennis Center when local mixed doubles team champions convene in Daytona Beach for the USTA Florida Section Adult Mixed 7.0 & 9.0 League Championships.

Teams competing this weekend in the 7.0 and 9.0 divisions will hail from 18 different counties or regions -- Alachua, Brevard, Broward, Collier, Duval, Escambia, Hillsborough, Indian River/St. Lucie/Martin, Lee/Charlotte, Leon, Marion, North Palm Beach, Orange/Seminole, Pinellas, Polk, Sarasota/Manatee, South Miami-Dade, and Volusia/Flagler counties.

NTRP (National Tennis Rating Program) divisions of play this weekend are 7.0 and 9.0 teams, with combined player ratings of no more than a 1.0 differential between the partners (example: a 9.0 team could be two 4.5-rated players, or a 5.0 and a 4.0).

Polk County defends its 2011 Florida Section 7.0 mixed title, when it advanced to the USTA Adult Mixed League National Championships after finishing ahead of second-place Volusia/Flagler last year in Daytona Beach. Marion County is the defending 9.0 mixed champion, in 2011 advancing to nationals after finishing ahead of second-place Sarasota/Manatee.

Here are where the teams landed in divisions/flights for the 2012 USTA Florida Section Adult Mixed 7.0 & 9.0 League Championships:

7.0 Division -- Flight 1: Broward (captain: Eduardo Noriega), Leon (Denean Sykes), Pinellas (Pat Bitonti), Polk (Jeremy Goff)
7.0 Division -- Flight 2: Alachua (captain: Ashok Kumar), Escambia (John Wimberly), Indian River/St. Lucie/Martin (Delane Guettler), North Palm Beach (Wendy Fritz)
7.0 Division -- Flight 3: Duval (captain: David Boehm), Lee/Charlotte (Chris Tellis), Orange/Seminole (Kyrsten Crociata), Sarasota/Manatee (Lance Martin), South Miami-Dade (Linda Lann)
7.0 Division -- Flight 4: Brevard (captain: Dawn Pfeil), Collier (Sylvia Rheker), Hillsborough (Sylvain Gauthier), Marion (Christy Drawdy), Volusia/Flagler (Rose Lucas)

9.0 Division -- Flight 1: Hillsborough (captain: Josh Melton), Indian River/St. Lucie/Martin (Colleen Crafton), Lee/Charlotte (Katrina Ramsey), Marion (Thiroshan Chetty)
9.0 Division -- Flight 2: Brevard (captain: Sonya Zuniga), Collier (Gerd Franke), Escambia (Wanda Taylor), South Miami-Dade (Julio Ugarte)
9.0 Division -- Flight 3: Alachua (captain: Kevin Banes), Broward (Cindy Zimmerman), Duval (Kelly Googe), Sarasota/Manatee (Barbara Lancer), Volusia/Flagler (Mike Sanders)

A Marion County team also advances directly to the 2.5 nationals as the only Florida region to host a local 2.5 league in 2012. Last year the team representing the Florida Section finished in third place at the 2.5 nationals, defeating the USTA Mid-Atlantic Section in the 3rd/4th place playoff.

The 2012 USTA League 2.5, 7.0 & 9.0 Mixed National Championships will take place Nov. 9-11, 2012 at the Hilton El Conquistador Golf & Tennis Resort in Tucson, Ariz.

USTA League provides fun and competitive matches for thousands of tennis players nationwide. It also gives players the opportunity to experience team camaraderie, to improve their tennis skills, to meet and compete against new players and to participate in competition beyond local league play. There were more than 806,000 participants in USTA League in 2011 within the adult, senior and mixed doubles divisions and the section league programs. The program, which celebrated its 30th Anniversary last year, is the world's largest recreational tennis league.
