Unseeded American Smyczek Wins Tallahassee Challenger

tallahassee-Logo.jpgUnseeded American Tim Smyczek of Milwaukee, Wisc., won the 20th edition of the Tallahassee Challenger on Saturday when No. 9 seed Frank Dancevic of Canada retired in the first set serving at 5-6 with a back injury.

Dancevic fell to the ground in pain and was helped to the chair by both Smyczek and the tournament trainer, and after a medical time-out retired from the match.

"I was expecting it to be a marathon match out there today," the 24-year-old Smyczek told the media. "I wasn't serving as well as I would have liked, but I did a good job getting myself into his service games throughout the set. It's just a shame that the match ended that way because Frank has been having such a great year so far."

It was the first-ever challenger-level title for the American, who rose from 282 to No. 210 with the victory. Last year he reached a career-high ranking of No. 158.

Smyczek was previously 0-3 career in challenger finals.

"It's a little bittersweet to win my first challenger this way because you don't want to see someone get hurt, but it's good to get the monkey off my back and hopefully I'll be able to build on this," Smyczek said.

In the doubles final, No. 1 seeds Martin Emmrich and Andres Siljestrom defeated qualifiers Artem Sitak of New Zealand and American Blake Strode 6-2, 7-6(4).

Live Chat Help for Tennis Parents, Players, Tournaments at USTA Florida Website

live chat logoIn April the USTA Florida website at www.ustaflorida.com debuted a live chat feature on its 10 and Under Competitive page, Parent/Coach Information page, and Tournament Director web page.

Ann Brown, USTA Florida competitive education coordinator, is available to provide live chat assistance with Florida competitive players, parents, coaches and tournament staff Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. to answer questions.

"We are always looking for new and innovative ways to get information to our players, parents, tournament directors, and coaches, and this will be a quick and easy way for them to connect," Brown says. "Most of the time a quick question is all you need answered and with a majority of the competitive community connected to the Internet, they are only a few key strokes away from the answer."
