USTA Florida Section League Tennis Championships Begin This Weekend

2012_league_section_chps_logoFlorida's USTA League men's and women's local and regional champions have been determined, and beginning this weekend the top teams will compete for the Florida state title and the chance to represent the USTA Florida Section at USTA League Nationals in September and October.

The USTA Florida Adult 2.5/3.5/4.5 Section Championships will be held on Aug. 10-12, 2012, and the 3.0/4.0/5.0 Section Championships on Aug. 17-19, both at the Florida Tennis Center in Daytona Beach.

USTA League adult players are rated according to the NTRP (National Tennis Rating Program) scale, which at the USTA Florida Section championships level rates from 2.5 (beginner) to 5.0 (advanced).

This weekend's 2.5/3.5/4.5 Section Championships see 2011 returning USTA Florida Section county champions Collier (Women's 3.5), Alachua (Women's 4.5), and Broward (Men's 3.5) back for another shot at advancing to USTA League Nationals in their respective NTRP divisions. Here are this weekend's participating teams:

Women's Participating Teams

Women's 2.5 --
Brevard (captain: Shelby Hill), Collier (Mindy Sylvester), Leon (Mary Macko), South Miami-Dade (Jaya Krutulis), Volusia (Cheralyn King)

Women 3.5 -- Collier (captain: Carol Loebs), Duval (Vanessa Viera), Indian River (Sandy Palma), Pinellas (William Parker), Polk (Kimberly Jeffares)

Women 4.5 -- Alachua (captain: Kar Yee Fransham), Broward (Hermine Greene), Duval (Cynthia McGehee), Hillsborough (Lynn Woods), Sarasota (Janet Kempton)

Men's Participating Teams

Men 2.5 --
Alachua (captain: John Stewart), Marion (Paul Steinberg)

Men 3.5 -- Broward (captain: Gary Lazarus), Escambia (John Wimberly), Lee/Charlotte (Dan Campbell), Marion (John Wheeler), Orange/Seminole (Thomas Crociata)

Men 4.5 -- Alachua (captain: Donald Blair), Broward (Gabriel Arraiz), Duval (Brian Monroe), Orange/Seminole (Kenton Keiling), Sarasota (Alan Amero)
 
Each of the division-winning teams will be entered into a drawing, and one team will win free USTA Florida apparel outfits from the USTA Florida online store. On Friday and Saturday of the event, teams will also have an opportunity to browse USTA Florida’s online store via on-site laptops and receive special discounts on orders placed during the championships.

USTA Leagues sponsor Stonyfield, the world's leading organic yogurt maker, will also be on-site with samples, along with health and fitness information for players. Stonyfield is the Official Yogurt of USTA League, the country's largest recreational tennis league with more than 335,000 players nationwide. Sunscreen company SolRX will also be on site, providing samples of its various products to players. 
 
The Florida men's and women's championship teams in each NTRP division will advance to USTA League Nationals. The 2012 USTA League 2.5 Adult National Championship will take place Sept. 28-30, 2012 at the Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, Calif. The 3.5 Adult National Championship will take place Oct. 5-7, 2012 at the Jim Reffkin Tennis Center in Tucson, Ariz., and the 4.5 Adult National Championship will take place Oct. 26-28, 2012 at the Jim Reffkin Tennis Center in Tucson, Ariz.
