Preview: 3 Florida Players at 2010 US Open National Playoffs--Women's Tennis

The United States Tennis Association's US Open National Playoffs -- Women's Championship, featuring the 16 USTA Section champions, will be held July 28?Aug. 1 at the Taube Family Tennis Center in Stanford, Calif. 

Three Florida players will feature in the tournament to be held in conjunction with the WTA Tour's Bank of the West Classic, the first women's event of the 2010 Olympus US Open Series. 15-year-old Jan Abaza, 33-year-old WTA veteran Alina Jidkova of Russia, and 16-year-old Jessica Pegula will represent Florida.

Live scoring is available through USTA.com and BankoftheWestClassic.com, and Sunday's final will be broadcast live on Tennis Channel and available live on ESPN3.com.  The winner will receive a wildcard into the 2010 US Open Qualifying Tournament, held Aug. 24-27, at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, in Flushing, N.Y., the home of the US Open.

Jan Abaza
Age:
15 
Hometown: Deerfield Beach, Fla.
Career-High Rank: 1,110 (April 2010)

Earlier this year, Abaza won the pre-qualifying tournament at the WTA Tour stop in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., and also competed in a charity exhibition in Jacksonville, Fla., with Todd Martin, Brian Gottfried and MaliVai Washington. Abaza gained a pro ranking for the first time in April by competing on the USTA Pro Circuit.

Alina Jidkova
Age:
33 
Hometown: Boca Raton, Fla.
Career-High Rank: 51 (March 2005)
 
The most accomplished player in the field, the Russian Jidkova has competed in all four Grand Slams, reaching the second round of the US Open in 2006 and playing in the main draw each year from 2002-2007. Qualifying via the USTA Texas Sectional Qualifying Tournament, she reached the cusp of the Top 50 in 2005, and holds career wins over Serena Williams, Samantha Stosur, Jelena Jankovic and Daniela Hantuchova. She also owns one WTA Tour title, winning the doubles in Acapulco in 2005.

Jessica Pegula

Hometown: Boca Raton, Fla.
Career-High Rank: 905 (December 2009)
 
Pegula dropped just five games in three matches to capture the women's title at the USTA Intermountain Sectional Qualifying Tournament, and after competing in the US Open juniors qualifying tournament last year, she is looking to take the next step to the women's singles in 2010. Pegula is currently ranked No. 83 in the world junior rankings. In 2009, she reached the quarterfinals of the USTA Pro Circuit $10,000 event in Sumter, S.C.

This inaugural year of the US Open National Playoffs featured 373 women in 16 US Open National Playoffs Sectional Qualifying Tournaments, with the 16 winners advancing to the Women's Championship. The US Open National Playoffs function as a series of tournaments held throughout the United States to make the US Open eligible to anyone and everyone 14-and-over with the passion to compete, regardless of playing ability or nationality. 

The US Open National Playoffs -- Women's Championship final is scheduled to take place on Sunday, Aug. 1, not before 4:30 p.m. on the stadium court, shown live on Tennis Channel and available live on ESPN3.com.
