QuickStart 'Wimbledon' on Grass at Jaguars NFL Game; Twilight Tennis This Weekend

September 7, 2010 01:45 PM
QuickStart Tennis' version of Wimbledon came to the Jacksonville Jaguar's Everbank Field last Thursday when fans of the NFL franchise played tennis on the lawns outside the stadium with the smaller racquets, balls, nets and courts designed for 10-and-under players prior to the Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Atlanta Falcons pre-season game.

Fans entering the stadium through the "Teal Town" entrance found multiple courts set up on the same short-shorn grass used on the stadium field.
The Jacksonville Jaguars cheerleaders visited, and a number of 10-and-under spectators and adults picked up racquets to try the official mini-tennis format the USTA is rolling out across the country.

"It was great exposure to have QuickStart Tennis at an NFL football game," said USTA Florida Tennis Program Coordinator for the Jacksonville area Amanda Becker. "Not only did many of the kids playing in Teal Town get to experience tennis for possibly the first time but many adults got a chance to hit some balls on the court too."

The QuickStart Tennis format is a new way for children 10 years of age and younger to learn and play the game. The shorter court sizes, smaller racquet sizes, foam and low-compression balls, modified scoring system, and even the net height have been adjusted to ease kids into the sport. Over 100 children are now playing QuickStart league tennis in Jacksonville, making it one of the largest programs in the state for young tennis players. Tennis fans in Jacksonville and the surrounding area can also mark their calendar for this weekend when the inaugural Twilight Tennis free community event will be held on Saturday, Sept. 11, from 6-10 p.m. at The Jacksonville Landing.
The event will feature the US Open women's final on the JumboTron screen, a Fall Tennis Fashion Show, live band, food and drink specials for all USTA members that show current USTA membership cards, an interactive tennis skills area with QuickStart Tennis mini-courts and fast-serve speed cage, a local teaching pro dunking tank and more.
