USTA Florida Welcomes Approval of 2011-2012 Board of Directors

The USTA Florida Board of Directors for the 2011-2012 term has been set, following submission by the USTA Florida Nominating Committee and approval for two-year terms beginning at the USTA Florida Annual Meeting in December 2010, and ending at the Annual Meeting in 2012.

"Congratulations to all for having been nominated and approved by the delegates for the next term as members of the Board of Directors for USTA Florida," said President-Elect Dan Casey. "I look forward to a fun and successful two years as we continue to make material moves to promote the game. Additionally, I would also like to thank all of the chairs and staff who have worked so diligently helping form their teams for the various committees and councils, and to [current president] Donn Davis for his help and guidance throughout this team-building process dating back a year or more."

One of the landmark decisions of the outgoing board was the approval of the USTA Florida "Share the Love" campaign, a $500,000 grant initiative on top of the organization's regular annual giving to help fund tennis programs and projects throughout Florida communities during challenging economic times. Funding priorities for the USTA Florida 'Share the Love' initiative include QuickStart Tennis and Jr. Team Tennis (coordinator training, start-up, etc.), public facility funding (schools, parks, conversion to QuickStart courts, etc.), community tennis awareness (innovative pro-active start-ups, program expansion), school programs and senior tennis programs/projects.

"We are very lucky to have a Board that is innovative and so supportive of continuing the great volunteer\staff relationship we have in our association to grow tennis," said USTA Florida Executive Director Doug Booth.

Florida USTA/ITA College Regionals, USTA Campus Showdowns This Fall

The United States Tennis Association has become the title sponsor of the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, and USTA Florida will be covering the Sunshine State's regional road to the national championships which begin at the Division I men's Southeast Regional Championships, held at the University of Florida in Gainesville on Oct. 21-25, 2010.

"I'm passionate about college tennis and I'm really happy that the USTA is working so well together with college tennis in the United States," said USTA Florida Competitive Tennis Coordinator Andy Gladstone. "It's my hope that all capable Florida junior players will have a shot to play college tennis."

Other regional championships this fall also under the spotlight in Florida will be the Division II women's regional at Florida Southern on Sept. 23-26, 2010; and the NAIA men's and women's regional at Embry-Riddle University on Sept. 30-Oct. 3, 2010.

Attendance is free to these events, which will feature some of the best players in Florida collegiate tennis fighting for a berth at the national championships in November 2010.

Also this fall throughout Florida will be a number of USTA Campus Showdowns, the fun, competitive one-days events held on college campuses that are open to all -- college and high school players, juniors, adults, league players and weekend hackers.

"It's 'back to school' time, and we have approximately 100 USTA Campus Showdowns scheduled across the country, and we're hoping to add 25-50 additional events by the end of the year," said Erica Perkins, senior manager, junior and collegiate competition at USTA national.

Singles and doubles are usually offered at the events, which give junior and college players opportunities for varied competition and a chance to see college campuses and college life. The events also help the host colleges build stronger ties between college programs and the local tennis community.

The USTA, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association and the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association have developed a partnership to provide college students the opportunity to play tennis as part of USTA's Tennis on Campus program.  Through these partnerships, USTA Florida encourages colleges to become involved in club tennis as participants in a school tennis club and/or an intramural program.

Tennis clubs are organized by students for students through the school's recreational sports department. Tennis Clubs are co-ed where they practice, play and socialize with each other along with competing against other schools. USTA Florida provides play opportunities for tennis clubs through its College Championship Series (CCS), a series of monthly tournaments hosted by various schools throughout the USTA Florida Section. At the end of the season USTA Florida hosts the USTA Campus Championship-Florida Section, which leads to advancement opportunities to the USTA National Campus Championship.

USTA Florida is available to assist with providing curriculum for a start-up USTA Tennis on Campus program, assisting in forming recognized Tennis Sport Clubs, and offering the opportunity to participate and compete in the USTA Campus Championship-Florida Section, the USTA National Campus Championship, and USTA Florida's College Championship Series.

Contact USTA Florida Team Tennis Coordinator Michelle Willis at willis@florida.usta.com or (386) 671-8937 if you have additional questions or would like to start a USTA Tennis on Campus program at your school.
