Youth Tennis Foundation of Florida Awards 8 Scholarships

YTF-logoThe Youth Tennis Foundation of Florida announced the 2010 winners of the Kelley Scholarships, eight awardees chosen from more than 50 applicants. Six $500 scholarship winners were named, and two $250 scholarship winners. Scholarship nominations were offered primarily from USTA Jr. Team Tennis league coordinators, team captains and parents.

The six $500 scholarship winners were Lydia Arflin, Yulee; Jordan DeSanctis, Port Orange; Paulina Reitman, Hollywood; Adam Shugar, Newberry; Caprice Thomas, Pembroke Pines; and Shawn Wilson, Tallahassee.

Winners of the $250 scholarships were Andrea Lansdale, Punta Gorda; and Chrissy Texidor, Coral Gables.

Established in 1962, the Youth Tennis Foundation of Florida Inc. is a non-profit organization that offers support for the development of youth tennis in Florida. The primary goal is to introduce children to the many benefits of tennis and provide scholarships, grants and awards to deserving players, coaches and tennis facilities. The YTF is particularly interested in novel programs, such as a rural initiative, to reach out and find those niches which are not currently being serviced by USTA Florida's various programs. The YTF is an independent organization consisting of a board of directors with diversified and varied backgrounds who come from all over the State of Florida, representing each of the eight USTA Florida regions.

QuickStart Tennis on the White House Lawn

On Wednesday First Lady Michelle Obama will team with the USTA, Billie Jean King and Serena Williams to introduce children to QuickStart Tennis, the USTA format for kids 10-and-under. The event will be held on the South Lawn of the White House starting at 11 a.m.

The First Lady was in Florida on Tuesday of this week, meeting with Panama City Beach community members regarding the impact of the BP oil spill, and on Tuesday continued her health push with the new www.LetsMove.gov website, hosting a morning web chat. The entire Obama family takes advantage of the White House tennis court on a regular basis, and are arguably the most active tennis family to reside at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

Florida Tennis Natives Falconi, Gullickson Named to 2010 ITA Collegiate All-Star Team

Two Florida natives, Jupiter's Irina Falconi and Palm Beach Garden's Chelsey Gullickson, were named to the 27th edition of the ITA Collegiate All-Star Team, which includes the nation's top-ranked men's and women's tennis players from the season-ending Campbell/ITA College Tennis Rankings at the NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA and NJCAA levels, as well as champions from the 2009 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships and 2010 NCAA Championships.

Falconi, who plays for Georgia Tech, finished No. 1 in the Campbell/ITA Rankings, while Gullickson, who plays for Georgia, won the 2010 NCAA Championships title.

Jonas Brothers, Demi Lovato Team with Nadal, Roddick, Clijsters, Djokovic for 15th annual Arthur Ashe Kid's Day

Pop superstars Jonas Brothers and Demi Lovato will join world No. 1 Rafael Nadal, Andy Roddick, Kim Clijsters and Novak Djokovic at the 15th Annual Arthur Ashe Kids' Day presented by Hess on Saturday, Aug. 28, at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y., from 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m., the weekend before the start of the US Open.

Hosted by Adrienne Bailon and Quddus, the show will feature special celebrity guests including Nick Cannon. The popular full-day tennis and music festival for children and families -- including interactive games, musical entertainment and tennis clinics -- will also feature performances from Allstar Weekend and School Gyrls. More musical acts and tennis stars will be announced in coming weeks.
Over the years, Arthur Ashe Kids' Day has featured many of music's biggest acts, including Justin Bieber, Rihanna, Jessica Simpson, Britney Spears, Jordin Sparks, Backstreet Boys, Ne-Yo, Sean Kingston, Jesse McCartney, Bow Wow and Hanson. Stadium show tickets are on sale now through Ticketmaster (1-866-OPEN-TIX), usopen.org and at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center box office. General admission promenade tickets cost $10 and loge tickets are $20. Arthur Ashe Kids' Day will be broadcast nationally by CBS on Sunday, August 29, from 12?1:30 p.m (EST).

Sharapova Donates Quarter Million to Chernobyl Children

Bradenton resident and former No. 1 Maria Sharapova recently made a visit to the region of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, after the official United Nations ambassador had donated $250,000 to provide children in the area with tennis and other sports activities.

"It has always been my dream to contribute to the recovery of a region where I have a personal connection," Sharapova said.

Sharapova's parents lived in the region, then left after the nuclear accident prior to her birth.
